The animal-friendly city lives up to its name: Taichung receives high honors in 2018 national animal protection and shelter management service assessments!
Taichung obtained excellent results in the 2018 National Animal Protection Service and Animal Shelter Management Service assessments conducted by the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan, taking home the Excellence award in the National Animal Protection Service category, the Superior award in the National Animal Shelter Management Service category, and the Best Fine Rate Award. Apart from thanking all those who supported and encouraged us, we are also grateful to the city's animal protection advisory committee, animal protection groups, the veterinarians association, the Pet Seller's Association, pet shops concerned about the public interest, and numerous animal protection volunteers and clinical veterinarians. All of these individuals and groups have contributed their efforts to animal protection in Taichung. It is thanks to public-private cooperation that we are making great strides toward making Taichung Taiwan's leading animal-friendly city and a livable, welcoming place for both humans and animals. Taichung's animal protection tasks not only include strengthened source management, but also continuing subsidies for spaying and neutering of household dogs and cats, charitable projects, and free spaying and neutering of dogs and cats in isolated areas. We are putting great effort into promoting responsible pet ownership, and regularly invite professional speakers to hold talks on subjects connected with animal protection and life education, conduct hands-on workshops, and even hold painting exhibitions. We are using a variety of lively and attention-getting methods to instill respect for life in children, students, and city residents of all ages, ensuring that the seeds of concern for animals take root and grow in all corners of the city. In the "Shelter Management" service category, we not only continue to sponsor halfway animal hospitals, the Joy of Adoption program, Homeless Dog Family Project, and Compassion Station program—all of which took advantage of the private sector' resources to promote dog and cat adoption and increase the city's adoption points—we also strive to enhance the quality of life of shelter animals, boost animal welfare through dog behavior training, grooming, and medical evacuation cooperation projects, and seek central government funding for improvements to the shelter's hardware environment. As a result, Taichung's Animal Shelter has become a benchmark facility much visited by domestic and foreign public and private organizations and groups. Our results in this annual assessment express the central government's affirmation of Taichung's animal protection and shelter management work, and also provide great encouragement to the front-line veterinarians and personnel who are out caring for shelter dogs and cats and enforcing animal protection laws and regulations. Look forward, the city will maintain a professional and dedicated attitude, cooperate with private groups, volunteers, and city residents interested in working hard for the sake of animal welfare, and take effective steps to become a livable city where residents, animals, and the environment coexist in harmony.
