Furry children at the Taichung Animal Shelter are fortunate indeed: Apart from having five-star grass, dog runs, and exercise area where dogs can get some fresh air and exercise, this year the dogs had a chance to participate in a cool and refreshing swimming activity away from the shelter.
As well as dogs that are brimming with energy and eager to play, the Animal Shelter also has many older dogs, overweight dogs, and three-legged dogs. To satisfy their needs and help them maintain good health and sound joints, the shelter's veterinarians and dog trainers strive to control their diet and ensure they have plenty of activity. In addition, the shelter has also arranged for water-play rehabilitation, and has found pet-friendly spaces where the dogs can swim. Apart from letting the dogs enjoy the water, these aquatic outings also let the canines come in contact with different environments and types of people. The dog trainers use the buoyancy of the water and toys to induce the dogs to participate, and the activity strengthens their muscles and increases their endurance, reduces the load on their joints, and promotes a trim figure. The swimming sessions ensure that dogs waiting at the Animal Shelter for new homes will have fond memories of their shelter stay, and also let the trainers and veterinarians spend happy and fulfilling afternoons with the dogs.
