Outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza—also known as bird flu—have occurred continuously in Taiwan during recent months. To strengthen poultry raisers' disease prevention consciousness and poultry farm biosafety management in Taichung City, the Animal Protection and Health Inspection Office invited Taichung poultry raisers to the February 23 "1st Taichung City 2024 Major Poultry Disease and Biosafety Awareness Meeting," at which experts spoke on the topic of "Bird Flu's Biggest Enemy: Providing Poultry with a Livable Raising Environment."
Bird pathogens are constantly mutating, and climate change has also made the control of poultry diseases (including bird flu, avian infections bronchitis, and infectious bursal disease, etc.) much more complex. Apart from comprehensive vaccination plans, improving bedding materials and air quality at poultry farms can also reduce the degree of respiratory stress and need for use of drugs, while enhancing the uniformity and protective ability of antibodies in chicken flocks. When employed in conjunction with other effective biosafety measures, these steps can successfully control diseases and boost chicken farms' economic returns. The Health Inspection Office has further stepped up awareness of the need for daily operational management and compliance with the requirements of Taichung's "H5, H7 Subtype Avian Influenza Protection Measures." We urge that poultry raisers perform daily inspections and record poultry's health condition; if any clinical symptoms of bird flu are discovered, please notify the Health Inspection Office immediately so that we can better guard the health of the poultry industry.
