Although the "My Dear Pet 2.0 Furry Kids Showtime" activity held by the Health Inspection Office for Taichung City's 2024 Picnic Day had to be postponed for one week due to a typhoon, the weather was fine when the date of the activity arrived. The city's Picnic Day was held in the Taiping District's Pinglin Forest Park, and induced a great number of dog owners to bring their furry kids to share in the fun. The event kicked off in the morning with a "Fun Pet Obstacle Time Trial," and the excitement immediately reached a fever pitch. Accompanied by their owners, the furry kids sprinted through an S-shaped course marked by triangular cones, and leaped over crossbars as they dashed toward the finish line. This race not only tested the dogs' agility, but also required good guidance and rapport on the part of their owners. While the dogs ran, spectators outside the fence shouted encouragement, and gave each furry kid an enthusiastic round of applause.
The much-awaited "Creative Dog Model Competition" was held with great fanfare in the afternoon, and was the day's second climax. The participating dogs and owners went up on stage wearing creative costumes, while spectators voted on the best costumes. A wide range of fun prizes awarded, including the "Heartstrings Prize," "Wow Dog Cone Prize," "Acting Like a Dog Prize," "Most Tangled Dog Prize," and "Messy Dog Prize." This competition let dogs with different shapes and appearances strut their stuff and show off their unique qualities on stage. As in last year's activity, participation in the competition was limited to dogs whose owners had performed pet registration. The law requires owners to perform pet registration, which also signifies that a pet has begun a new life in a human household.
In addition, the Health Inspection Office also set up coloring book and lapel badge production tables, where parents could sit with their children and color or make badges. Apart from giving parents a chance to spend time with their kids, these tables also let children absorb animal protection knowledge while creatively drawing their favorite animals. The Health Inspection Office thus taught the children about the need to fulfill their responsibilities and duties when raising pets. At a dog health checkup booth, veterinarians from the Taichung City Veterinary Medical Association provided free health examinations and medical consulting services to dogs and their owners, while also communicating correct dog-raising concepts.
Although it seemed like this very successful Picnic Day activity ended too soon, the happy mood at this event left everyone with treasured memories that will remain long in every participant's heart. The Health Inspection Office hopes to rely on fun, educational activities like this one to increase residents' attention to their pets' health and well-being, while extending the animal welfare concept to every corner of society. By letting owners understand the importance of companionship and exercise to their dogs, these activities will transform them into good, capable masters.
